BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo (13 - present)

The whole idea of the 3 Series GT was to combine sportiness and performance with practicality and refinement. It’s safe to say that BMW have achieved that goal. The odd, bulbous shape may not get some people as excited as others, but there’s no denying it’s a good looking car. And of course, the coveted badge itself can be enough to nudge punters towards getting out the cheque book. From a practical standpoint, the GT is a sensible buy. For example, it’s more practical than the touring model and there isn’t much difference in the price. There’s also more interior space than that of the bigger 4 Series, which is impressive. On top of that, the cabin is beautifully designed and absolutely oozes comfort and refinement. It has a well-built central console and the latest in-car technology, even on the base models. In terms of driving, the GT is aimed more at comfort and practicality, so don’t expect the ‘ultimate driving experience’. Having said that, it’s still a good car to drive. It handles well, and the ride feels supple on the move.

Look out for

•  There was a recall so make sure the necessary work was carried out

What we like

•  Even more practical than the touring version

•  Instantly recognisable thanks to the distinctive appearance

•  There’s a vast selection of economical engines to choose from

•  Really good car to drive, feels smooth and refined on the move

What we don't like

•  There can be a bit of body lean when taking on corners
